Ieithoedd Cymru 2008 / Languages Wales 2008

Our 4th annual conference, Ieithoedd Cymru / Languages Wales, took place on 4th july at the Swansea Marriott Hotel. Over 100 teachers and other languages professionals attended the event, which comprised seminars and an exhibition.

The Welsh Assembly Government Education and Skills Minister, Jane Hutt, addressed the conference, urging participants to take part in the consultation, due in the Autumn, to "refresh" the national languages strategy, Languages Count.

A new DVD-Rom, entitled Sicrhau bod Ieithoedd yn Cyfrif:Ennyn llwyddiant a chynyddu niferoedd sy’n astudio ITM drwy gynllun Cytundeb CILT Cymru / Making Languages Count:Inspiring success and raising take-up in MFL through the CILT Cymru Compact scheme, which showcases good practice from schools throughout Wales, was previewed at the conference. A free copy of this resource will be sent to all maintained secondary schools in Wales in the autumn term.

Seminars at the conference covered all aspects of language teaching and learning in schools and colleges from inspirational activities to use with primary learners, through to alternatives to GCSE and new options for A Level via skills-based learning in Key Stage 3, good practice identified in inspection, and innovative curriculum design involving vocational language learning and the Welsh Baccalaureate.

The conference provided a wonderful opportunity for colleagues to gather and discuss the many changes in the pipeline for MFL in Wales and to share some of the inspiring work going on throughout the country.
